Steffen and I have been close friends for many years. Probably also because we have both chosen a rather interesting path of life. We both fulfilled and lived out our personal dreams in our professional life. By chance Steffen had the time and the desire to get to know "my world" in Egypt when the project came up.
So he joined in on our work camp group of yalla e.V. and the evangelic youth organization...and - of course – he didn't forget to bring along his camera equipment. Or has ever anyone seen Steffen without his camera? Through his sensitive and caring nature he quickly and easily won over the hearts of the orphans in Cairo and at the same time impressed the German kids who came along with his photographic knowledge. In the course of the project he even introduced participants to the world of photography
This is how the photography part even became part of the work camp. We all had loads of fun and were really impressed by the orphans, their warmth and their ability to be happy about even little things. These orphans were really something special and the great images that resulted from the shooting started to make us think about how we could combine these two things together.
This is how the calendar idea came up and the idea of not typically demonstrating these kids as poor, needy kids but rather as self confident personalities. The calendareven won a price at the end and hung on walls of not only private households but on the many walls of student flats, of nursery schools and general schools. The response to the calendar was more than what we had hoped for – everyone was curious about the children and wanted to learn more about them. I think with the project we allowed each other a good insight in the world of the work behind it and also in the world of art photography. Thank you, Steffen and I'm really looking forward to the next project with you!
